What the fuck happened while I was gone today?

I went to a Theros draft, went 2-1 but got third to last in tiebreakers because both of the people I beat one a game each. We Rochestered the rares and I got a foil magma jet so it was worth it. That thing is beautiful

To be perfectly fair and honest I played and enjoyed Fate/Stay Night but that game had like 10 minutes of sex scene per 30 hours of decent storyline.
^

Also, the sex managed to be pretty creepy.

I've actually taken to calling him "The Burger King," cuz, well, look at him. He looks like that creepy fucker waiting outside your window with a BK croissant or something.[

So they're playing Legacy at the store I like going to tonight. I didn't have anything prepared, but saw this at Coolstuff while I was there. Kind of had to improvise but I am pretty sure I got the idea. It was a quick build but pretty cheap.

[deck]Dark Depths[/deck]

One Taiga is worth more than the entire rest of the deck, so I guess if you're looking to build a cheap Legacy deck you could just play Stomping Grounds instead
and be fine.

Afaik... there aren't any. Like I said, I played twice - once when the game first came out (and if you could put anything semi-consistent together you could win - the field was like 80% Charizard, Blastoise, Bulbasore, and Pikachu decks - like all those stuffed into one deck :rolleyes2: ) and once for a few months when I simply asked some local players their opinions on the best decks in the format and I chose the one that best fit my criteria and just went through a list of legal cards to see if there was any way to improve it.

Like I said, the Pokemon TCG competitive scene is a whole other ball game. Any sites I found that had any information at all were devoted to Pokemon as a whole: the show, video games, and card game. The closest thing to a competitive resource I think I came was the forum
PokeGym which is like Sally or here - some decklists to look over and tournament reports to read to give you an idea of the meta, but no articles from PokePros or anything.

Basically, you've got to do like 90% of your own leg work if you want to be competitive. If you want to discuss this kind of stuff, though, lmk - I'm apparently retardedly good at that game. Too bad I don't really enjoy it. :slant:

I got that feeling from the limited amount of research I did on my own. I'll hit you up once I do a little more legwork, although right now I'm thinking I'll probably build something around this interaction:

Gonna have to see what the rest of the cards around it should look like.

I was reading that prize payout for Pokemon tournaments is pretty unreasonably high, which is another pretty big driving force. RT said earlier that he won a bunch playing it, and I was reading around on some LGS websites saying that they were hosting 5ks pretty regularly. That's pretty nuts considering how small the turnout has to be compared to Magic. The effort value seems WAY better.

I will give the Pokemon competitive scene this, though: IME, they are quite a bit friendlier than the top players at the average M:tG tourney.

That year I went to Regionals, before the first game my opponent was like "I haven't seen you before. How long you been playing?"

I said two weeks.

He said "That's cool. I've been playing for a few years competitively - went to Nationals and Worlds last year - I won't take it easy on you since this is a tournament but if you want I can help you with your deck after the game."

Then I beat his ass like he stole something and he said "Wow... have you seriously only played for 2 weeks? That deck is really good, where did you get it? Have you considered cards _______?"

By about round 6 word had gotten around and every opponent I went up against asked me "Hey, are you that guy?" and after the game, most of them wanted to know if I
was on any forums or if I wanted to exchange emails or if I'd be interested in playtesting - which has never happened to anyone I know at a Magic tournament - most of the time there the opponent just wants to tell me all about how they should have won because their deck is better and/or they're a better player.

Also, sad as this sounds, Pokemon tournaments smell better and there are significantly more females - a relevant number of which are 20-something and do-able.

I just wish I liked the game more...

+EDIT+ Regarding Payout: tournaments are, afaik, completely free and the bigger the tournament, the larger the payout. Like I said, I played in one Regionals and prize was:
17-32 - 1/3 box of product
9-16 - 1/2 box of product
5-8 - box of product
3-4 - box of product + trophy (which was honestly pretty baller - it was completely crystal)
2 - box of product + trophy + $1,000 + plane ticket to Nationals
1 - box of product + trophy + $1,000 + all expenses paid trip to Nationals

Not bad for
a free tournament.
