How did I miss that?

What about meishin, the mind cage? It's going in a nekusar deck, so I'll usually have enough cards to make a serious dent in everything's power.
If you can make it work, then global stuff like that is awesome.

[card]Curse of Death's Hold[/card], perhaps?

Ooooh, Sickening Dreams if you can afford the discard.

I was more looking at effects that got everything. Pyroclasm and it's ilk are only likely to fry utility creatures, I'm more concerned with big things, since things that nail all the big boys tend to mop up the little guys too. I was running rolling temblor and anger of the gods for a while, and I'm still running incendiary command, and temblor and anger rarely ever killed what I wanted them to, and the 2 damage to each creature mode of command is the least used (it's usually wheel and 4 to the dome and you die, but I have hit non-basic lands for great justice).

Blasphemous act, black suns zenith, magmaquake, and sudden demise are all big enough (or can easily be made big enough) to hit the relevant targets. Warp world is nice in theory, but I am running a ton of instants and sorceries (mostly removal and a few wheels) which pairs rather poorly with warp world (lower density of things that can get put into play).
Ixidron seems like an interesting choice, doing roughly the same thing as curse of the swine, only hitting everything at a flat rate and leaving me with a big fatty. Evacuation is actually pretty interesting given I am also running black vice, viceling, ebony owl netsuke, and price of knowledge.

Also weird note from testing, mogis does some badass shit, and he's a creature more than I thought he would. As soon as thassa's price drops i'm going to test her, because the only reason she wasn't on the table before was due to my concerns about only being an enchantment.

Blasphemous Act. I don't think I've ever cast it for more than 1 or 2 mana. I'm also a fan of Inferno, but it's pricy. Chain Reaction is good value most of the time, but not every time. In Blue, I love Evacuation.

Used up all my luck/talent making it to the top 8 of the GPT and then promptly scrubbed out. Mark one up for the good guys.

Couldn't plan in the second one without dropping from the first one.

My dilemma for the day: do a research paper for my World Religions class (due at 11 pm Eastern 'Murica time) or travel an hour away to play a gig with my dad's band from 2-6. I haven't seen my dad since X-mas and I'm dying to make some fucking noise.

Anyone want to write a paper for me? :unibrow:

I'm gonna try. It'll likely be my worst paper ever. But I guess some grade is better than taking a straight zero.

But I'm definitely playing. I just put new strings on the axe and I packed up all my gear. I'm ready to tell a bunch of barflies to make some fucking noise.

My advice? Besides practice, practice, practice, learn everything you can about everything. Music theory, amps, cords, stomp boxes, digital processors, pick-ups, and axes. Then forget all of it. Seriously. At that point, you'll understand that simplicity is the best tool of all.

It took me a long time to learn what I really wanted in terms of sound, live set-up, and execution. As it turns out, playing live is all about volume control and the "less is more" philosophy. You like the sound of distorted guitars? As it turns out, almost all of the guitarists you like actually use less gain than you think. The
power is in the volume of your amp, the type of pick-ups you favor, and the ability to control your tone with your volume knob(s) and pick attack. I finally realized that what I was looking for could be found in a single channel tube amp with a good amount of gain, like an old Marshall JCM 800 from the early 80's. Since those heads pretty much cost an arm and a leg, I started looking around for alternatives. As it turns out, about 5 or 6 years ago, famed amp hot-rodder, Mike Soldano, started up the Jet City line of amp heads. The first amp Jet City Amplication put out was a single channel 20 watt high-gain tube amp for the awesome price of $300. It has that Brit-style sound very similar to a JCM 800. From there, I knew it was all about sticking an overdrive pedal in front of it while at a high volume to get that metal sound. Since the amp head is at 20 watts, it's easy to get those tubes nice and hot and ready to growl. To get my clean sound, I just roll the volume knob back (and maybe switch to my neck
pick-ups), disengage the overdrive, and pick cleanly. Works every time. I also keep a Boss Super Chorus set at low settings with a high level running at all times to thicken the sound up.

I can't give you any advice on how to have a stage presence except for the obvious: confidence. Lots of confidence. Although, some amount of liquor or beer helps. Not so much that it degrades your playing ability, but enough so that you're loose and "feeling it."

Being a "gear head," in my opinion, really isn't where anybody should ever be as a true musician. Though I'd be lying if I said that looking at a Musician's Friend catalog didn't give me the same feels as staring at a Hustler centerfold. It's good to know what you want and to be informed about how certain pieces of gear work. It's even good to get excited about new toys coming out. But I've met too many "musicians" in my time to know the difference between a real player and an elitist who can't really play, yet knows
everything about vintage gear in order to make somebody feel dumb.

Just like in Magic, you have to surround yourself with people better than you if you want to grow. If you keep jamming with just yourself or other beginners you will rarely get where you need to be. Being put "on the spot" and finding yourself in new situations is where you'll learn to think fast and, subsequently, grow as a player.

Whatever you do, just keep playing. It's what a musician does. Not because of anyone else or because you feel that you have to. It's because you enjoy it and it provokes a response in your soul that you can't get anywhere else. That's what it means to be a musician.

Thanks, Khaos. I actually don't even have an electric guitar right now, but that seems to be the way to go if I want to do anything beyond playing for my dog and my cat. I know where you're coming from with the "gear head" thing. Back in middle school, I probably spent more time looking into various aspects of lacrosse gear than actually trying to improve as a player (aside from practices with the team, of course). Surprisingly, though, I didn't get that way with archery, which I started ~2 1/2 years ago, so maybe I outgrew it. For guitar, I think I'll just want to find one fairly simple setup that gives me a nice sound, though that might be difficult to find with everything that's out there.

Freedom, Epiphone actually makes decent low end acoustics. If I ever needed another acoustic to lug around for parties or if I was starting out, I'd look there. Around the $200-$300 range is where I'd start.

This approach does have some side effects, though. Embarrassingly, somehow the frequency on my tuner got up to 467Hz or something like that once. Nothing I was playing sounded right and I didn't have the knowledge to know what to look for. One day I noticed the Hz display and thought to check up what it is. Turns out it's supposed to be 440Hz. Oops.
This happened to me once, too. It pays to actually know stuff about your passion.

I'm not really sure where I'm looking to go with guitar. I'd played for two or three years when I was younger, but gave it up after finding that I really didn't have the drive to practice often enough to get good. I noticed my two guitars in the back of my closet when cleaning up over Christmas break, and thought I'd try picking it up again. I find that I'm enjoying it a lot more now, especially all of the music theory stuff. I'm still very much a beginner, but I like to think that I'm learning and improving quickly.
