Is [card]Legion's Initiative[/card] viable in Standard? I've looked at it from a number of different angles relative to aggro decks--which stand to gain the most from it--but everything about it slows a swarm deck down. True, if you have a red 1-drop on the field it does impact damage similar to KoI coming down T2, but it still wants you to keep mana up for the protection ability, which is again inherently non-aggressive. It also regrettably doesn't synergize mana-wise with BTE, which while not a deal-breaker, does limit its definable applicability.

The card seems (duh) to want to be in a dedicated Boros deck with cards that are borderline Standard playable, but of course cards that need other cards to be good yada yada...Still, I really dig Wojek Halberdiers (and for that matter Skyknight Legionnaire), and it seems that the deck in which
it would be playable would include the enchantment.

Without question, the BTE-based and other mana-accel decks are dominating Standard Aggro, but is the resiliency offered by LA and Boros Charm enough to make a deck viable? Can the lack of speed be made up for by the ability to keep board presence through both all-in combat and board wipes? Things like thoughts of 6-power hellkites and 8/8 indestructibles on the attack just sound wickedly fun...

Oh, my brothers. That was a very enjoyable anniversary filled with good food, excellent sex, multiples of orgasms, and a good night's rest followed by a hot breakfast. There would be more sex this morning, but the wife had to depart for work early.

windstrider, I heartily approved until the last sentence.

You should never let something as trivial as work get in the way of phallic domination.

I've come to the conclusion that Legion's Initiative is a trap card. If I really want to protect my board, why not just play a more versatile card in Boros Charm?

So here's something different - I'm thinking of making a BYOS Delver deck and here's what I've got so far:

Innistrad - Shards - 5th Edition

[deck]Creatures: 15
4 Delver of Secrets
4 Snapcaster Mage
4 Meddling Mage
3 Geist of Saint Traft

Spells: 25
4 Brainstorm
4 Portent
4 Thought Scour
4 Unsummon
4 Path to Exile
3 Winter Orb
2 Elspeth, Knight-Errant

Lands: 20
4 Adarkar Wastes
4 Cavern of Souls
8 Island
4 Plains[/deck]

Elspeth may be a little greedy with only 8 sources of W mana - in addition, if I drop it, my curve would top out at 3 and, with so many cantrips, I could afford to run 18 lands.

Another option for the deck would be Miracle spells since I run Brainstorm and Portent to turn them on and/or actual countermagic and the SB options are pretty hot: Hurkyl's Recall busts up Afinity, Ethersworn Canonist hurts combo (if it's needed with MM and Winter Orb MD), the deck itself is anti-
control so I probably don't need anything for that, and I can't think of anything against Aggro off the top of my head, but I'm sure there's something.

Any thoughts?

Stop playing Meddling Mage mainboard and stop playing Elspeth entirely.

Play [card]Runechanter's Pike[/card]. Also Midnight Haunting is a card.

Stop playing Meddling Mage mainboard
In the BYOS tournament, your decklist is available to your opponent.

And I can get behind removing Elspeth.

It still isn't that great. Hate bears aren't winning you the game. You want to be actively winning the game every turn in a tempo deck.

There are a lot of combo decks in BYOS - which means that there are a lot of MUs where a turn 2 Mage is very nearly gg. Even against a non combo deck, being able to look through your opponent's list and remove whatever card you don't want to see that game is powerful.

So when it doesn't make it impossible for your opponent to win, it still makes it very difficult for them to mount any sort of defense or take the initiative.

[quote="[url=viewtopic.php?p=58876#p58876:2rlhk56b]Alex » Thu May 02, 2013 12:51 pm[/url:2rlhk56b]":2rlhk56b]Also if you ixnay Elspeth and the Meddling Mage, you can play a new set. One with Lightning Bolt in it. Because Lightning Bolt > Path to Exile.[/quote:2rlhk56b]

I'd have to play a different base set, and Lightning Bolt is not better than Brainstorm [i:2rlhk56b]and[/i:2rlhk56b] Portent.

That does open up other possibilities, though.

Assuming I didn't want Shards as my other block, what would some other options be?

Kamigawa gives Jitte and Ninjas but not much else that I can think of.
Ice Age gives Swords, FoW, and frees up Brainstorm and Portent so I could go with another base set.
Ravnicas give Shocklands and some pretty good stuff like Bob or Lightning Helix.
Onslaught gives me Standstill...

From that list it looks like Ice Age is the winner, and then you can pick the core set that gives the best value, potentially including bolt.
