I personally think Dos Rakis is a better place to be at in an event right now. Its an unexpected deck that can straight up destroy unprepared people.

Everyone's seen R/g aggro now, they know how to play around it.

People need to be reminded Falkenrath Aristocrat and Hellkite are magic cards, and that Stonewright is a beast.

It also can play Rakdos' Return which is pretty huge game against tap-out control lists and that fucking Golgari control list, as well as Olivia in the SB for re-animator match-ups.

Methinks you have diverged from Fate's train of thought, Kaze...he called bullshit on the Golgari Control list that's been floating about on the fringes for the past few months, then when Raspy poked him about it, Fate stated that Patriotic Control had already pushed the limits of his tolerance for an aggro-tuned control. The Golgari list, on the right draw, poses
a potential headache for red-based aggro (except maybe Dos Rakis); it runs spot removal into a board wipe, then drops a threat that Rg can't deal with easily (Desecration Demon, for example). Its creatures all interact well with one another for sac-based advantages; however, outside of its good hands, the deck can get steamrolled and thus hasn't made a sustained showing on the leader boards (it pretty much sucks against Junk Crats, for example).

I read World War Z and watched a bunch of zombie movies yesterday. I realize now that I don't own enough weapons if the zombie apocalypse actually happens.

I wrote a primer for the B/G Control deck (The Rock) on the Competitive page. It's my first primer so it might suck, but at least you'll get some decklists in it.

I haven't been the B/G control deck against Dos Rakis, but I've been Dos Rakis against B/G control, and I was victorious. But we all know Dos Rakis just steals games from nowhere sometimes.

Gonna want a good .22lr for the zombie apocalyse - assuming they're Walking Dead zombies and not World War Z zombies.

So who knows what happened with Helios?

I do not, and am very curious.

On another note, Shivan Dragon is getting printed in M14. He's not at the power level he was in 1994 when he was my favorite card, but it's still a nice nostalgia inclusion.

I do own a .22 rifle. Problem is, it's single shot bolt action (its old as hell), but I'm a helluva shot with it. If I had the time to aim and reload from a high vantage point, I'm good. I'll need something better for fast zombies.

Well I still frequent Sally on occasion, but I've lost the will to argue with people - today Dark Ritual told me that Azorius Charm on turn 5 is just as valuable as one played on turn 2 and that removal played on a 2 drop represents exactly the same resource loss to your opponent as removal played on a 5 drop. Sigh...

Other forums are for other hobbies, though.

Right now, I'm happier than I've been in a long, long time. School's fucking over :D Well, kind of. Finished finals for my hardest classes, feeling confident, and just have to take two more tomorrow that are pretty much a joke.
Not sure what's up with Helios. I Hope he didn't just leave.
I should get to playing more magic. I want to get into modern, but I'm not really sure about my local meta and what decks will work well. I'm looking at building either burn/rdw (first choice, if there's a varied meta), soul sisters (if it's heavy aggro) or mono blue tron (if I see a fair amount of combo, which I might. Don't want to build this if I also see a fair bit of aggro, which is almost inevitable in every meta) Thanks for getting me
to try blue tron, Kaze! Pretty neat deck, and I like it much, much more than R/G tron. Probably going to drop a lot of money on modern lands and MM reprints soon, before the price of both starts to go up.

Also looking at going to SCG Philly. I live less than an hour from the city, and I've been looking at taking my skills somewhere beyond FNM for a while now. Also in the same boat as Calamity, where I have GRUUL SMASH built and am in love with the deck, but I don't know if it's right for the tourney. I'm not looking to spend money on Dos Rakis or any other deck, so I'll probably just say "fuck it" and stick with it, no matter what the meta is. I could also fall back onto KDW, since I feel really confident with it due to playing it with almost no changes for about half a year. Decisions, decisions...

1. What exactly is a manifest? (could google, rather converse)

2. THERES NO META THAT CANT BE SMASHED

3. If you have the skill and experience to pilot KDW (I sure as hell didn't) its definitely stayed the same for a reason

4. If the fake Alex is also an aggressive mulliganer (though the "he plays green stuff all the time gave me pause), then Fate sure is funny sometimes....

THERES NO META THAT CANT BE SMASHED
The is no meta....only Gruul...

The best advice ever is "go with what you know." Seriously. In the last few months, I've taken a Patrick Sullivan quote to heart and it always calms me down when I get the "pre-tourney jitters" and start double guessing my deck and sideboard. I don't remember the quote verbatim, but it goes something like:

Don't try to break the metagame with some fancy new deck or secret tech. Just play a deck that allows you to play the best Magic you possibly can, which in turn will force your opponent to actually play Magic with you.

With that in mind, I've realized that I know KDW better than any Magic deck I could possibly pick
up right now. More often than not, it gets there because (1) I make fewer mistakes with my deck than my opponent will with his/her deck, and (2) people have forgotten about the deck itself, which means they aren't prepared for it and they actually are forced to outplay me. When I go to GP Miami, I think the only decision I'll have to make is whether or not I'll SB Zealous Conscripts or Thundermaw Hellkite simply due to the fact that I've seen decks using Lingering Souls more and more. Other than that, I could care less about what the metagame is shaping up to be like because I know my deck is strong and I know enough about the 10 or so "big decks" out there to adjust my play accordingly.

When you're truly comfortable with a deck, you'll make fewer mistakes and, more importantly, actually have fun playing win or lose. There's nothing worse than picking up a deck that you think might get there and then scrub out with it, and then you get mad.
There's no fun in that. I decided a long time ago that if I'm gonna go down in a tournament, they're gonna have to pry my Red Deck out of my cold, dead fingers.

I usually pick deck based on the meta, or pick something powerful that can go over the top of everything, but piloting gruul for so long has taught me the value of just playing one of the "best" decks. Doesn't really matter to me if people have played gruul most of the season and know it's plays. That's all happened because the deck is insane and if you stumble I win. Add to the fact that my experience gives me an edge in all mirror matches and it's hard for me to not play gruul.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

@Redthirst: pretty sure DarkRitual is a bad magic player and a mediocre poster.

That's basically what I've been wanting in an article forever. In depth analysis of multiple lines written clearly for any upcoming competitive players. Top notch material.

If I were going to any big tournament I'd take mono red with me (or Khaos Deck Wins as it's known colloquially around here). I've piloted it so much over the past 9 months that I know it like the back of my hand. I could probably play it in my sleep, and I honestly feel like I can win any matchup with the deck. That's a good feeling to have.

I'm leaning towards playing Gruul because I got it together a couple weeks ago and I've picked it up really fast. The deck suits me well and I've been tuning it (still deciding whether i want pillar main or not, and what i want in the board), and have another two weeks to get comfortable with it so I'm going to play it.

Plus i just have this gut feeling that it's the right deck for me to play.
