3-1'd with that deck btw. Apparently when you play Pyroclasm against your mono red opponent games 1 and 2 on turn 4 they just lose every time. Who knew?

I seem to always see U/R more than anything else when people draft in most formats. Is that coincidental or what?

Also, for anybody interested, thinking about starting a Thursday night Standard Peasant league with some friends that live over in California. Any of you guys interested in something like that? I could do a write-up on the format how we've been playing it (official rules say only 5 uncommons, we've been playing unlimited uncommons) as well as some archetypes I think are going to be good.

Here's a deck I came up with on the fly. The mana seems surprisingly good considering the fact that guildgates are coming in tapped. Prophetic Prism and Shimmering Grotto really help though.

[deck]Peasant Delver[/deck]

Should be fun.

When you P1P1 a Wildfire, wheeling both Earthquake and Rolling Earthquake, you're almost obligated to play a control deck.

So I'm reading Next Level Deck Building by Patrick Chapin. So far everything I've read is stuff that HamFactorial has already taught us. Thank you for sharing your mighty math skills to make us all better players. I really appreciate you guys.

It's a good book. A lot of the stuff in my Modern article is stuff I originally learned from that book.

Mutavault's great in gruul. The opportunity cost is cutting boros reckoner(depending on how many vaults you're running) and Chandra's phoenix is likely better anyways. I'm not saying Alex is wrong. I'm saying he's less right then he thinks he is.

I've personally found mutavault to be fine to good in every deck I've tested it in from Gruul, to UWR, to Jund. I guess I'm taking the opposite stance of mana bases are so good, why wouldn't you run something like mutavulat(or even encroaching waste) to get every ounce of value out of your mana. It's not like your decks getting any worse against burning earth, and Gruul without reckoners only needs 18 sources of colored mana anyways to do it's thing so theoretically, playing 18 colored lands, with 4 mutavaults is just giving you tons of flood insurance while making firefist striker 10x better and making mogg flunkies playable as a redundant 3/3 for 2.

Edit: Patrick
Chapin for all his willingness or, dare is say, glee to go way to deep on control lists and scrub out of pro tours is secretly one of God's gifts to magic.

Yes I'm a huge fanboy.

You all would probably be too if you knew he was actually the first person to ever top 8 a pro tour with mono-red sligh.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

I don't understand the hate. It has been my best card across the six events (24 rounds) and testing within my play group I've played in since M14 became legal.

Isn't that deck jaw-dropping? I mean, I love the idea of access to Baron in Jund, particularly with KWR (the thought of activating it with him against Aristocrats gives me straight-up chills). But Lantern or no, Garruk in a 4-color deck and trying to curve Huntmaster in Baron requires one hell of a lot more favor with the powers of variance than I enjoy.

I was, on the other hand, glad to see Sam Black's comments on playing his variant on The Aristocrats. In particular, I was really glad to see him admit that
his sideboard was just a bunch of cards that were playable on-color, because damned if I could find any rhyme or reason to some of his choices relative to either the deck or the rest of his sideboard. His proposed "next step" for the list is somewhat less all-in on the threaten theme in the main and the board is more cohesive. I'm also chuckling at the idea of playing 4 Fiend Hunter with 4 Resto...you didn't really want that Huntmaster or that Tusk, did you?

I don't see much hate, only reminders to keep our heads cool when it comes to Mutavault, and see the card for what it is. Remember when Boros Reckoner was released? Everybody tried to put him in all decks if the mana base allowed it, and those who didn't have supporting mana bases tried to make them work. Now the card is used in decks where it works without forcing it. Same thing with Mutavault.

Does anyone else find it incredulous that the Jedi Jund deck didn't face a copy of Burning Earth?

I was going to run it in my R deck, but then Kamahl explained to me how bad it was against a 26 nonbasic land deck so I decided not to.
