I have some good and bad news for you, my friend.
1) No, I've never thought about going Mono Blue. I believe it's a quirky deck that has no game against control.
2) I'm working at the moment on Wr deck. White Weenie with access to burn spells and Boros Charm.
A) I think skullcrack allows you to kill master of waves with the 'Damage can't be prevented clause". You shouldn't side in skullcrack for this niche application, but I find it funny.
B) Switched decks with my buddy at FNM tonight(piloted Esper) and we got 3/4th. If I had won round 3, we could have split 1st/2nd but I'm a scrub that can't beat mainboard sin collectors into whips into thoughtseize.
Overall, fun night.
#A yes that works if they block a red dude.
#B Gj though.
I swear to God, every thread we make falls victim to Godwin's law except instead of Hitler it's redthirst's piece.
Granted, it's more or less Florida's biggest FNM of the year, but nonetheless, I'm treating it as if it were a Pro Tour event.
So far, I'm proud of myself. I playtested to the point where I know what I want to play; I'm confident in my choice (except my last few sideboards slots keep shifting, but this is normal, I hear. ). I eschewed Friday Night Magic, heavy drinking, and strip clubs in favor of a quiet night at home, where I actually packed a lunchbox with sammiches, protein bars, 5-Hour Energies, and water (Basically, everything I will need to keep myself hydrated and fueled.). I went to bed early - I'd hoped to get a full 8 hours, but I'm so excited I woke up an hour before my alarm, which gives me time to post this as I leisurely eat my breakfast.
I am so fucking ready.
I'm going to
run a Mogis list for States. The funny thing is, my testing started out with Z's Pyromancer Boros list. It's a powerful deck, but I was fucked several times by the Temple coming into play tapped. However, I must admit the sideboard is insanely powerful. I switched to Mono Red version, and while the games flowed a lot smoother for me, I kept coming to the same conclusion I reached a week or so ago - I need Boros Reckoner maindeck. Fiendslayer Paladin is apparently a card that's caught fire around here, and it's even worse for me when it's in a U/W deck. My deck slowly morphed back into the Mogis list. Actually, I feel like it has everything I want right now in a Red Deck.
nSideboard
3 Mizzium Mortars
2 Annihilating Fire
3 Act of Treason
4 Skullcrack
2 Burning Earth
1 Stormbreath Dragon
[/deck]
The only thing that's notable about the deck is that I maindeck Hammer, and in matches where the Hammer isn't so great (like against G/W), I side in Mouthbreather Dragon. I also still believe in the power of Burning Earth, although it's nowhere near as good as it was a month ago. Still, I believe it will be useful against people forcing Esper and Junk.
But then again, my sideboard keeps shifting around in my head, so I'm always up for suggestions. It does happen to be a long drive to Altamonte Springs, so I'll be checking DTR often.
Whatever happens today, I'm going to have fun. I want to win, but my priority will be to have a good time. I only wish that I had a Fires of Salvation polo to wear so I could represent. Oh well, I
guess I'll just have to win so I can namedrop you guys in the article for TCG Player.
In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.
I rarely skip a Khaospawn wall of text because I know there is always piss at the end of the rainbow.
A esper-control mage with a cracked skull just called zem's pyro deck AIDS when his sphinx for 4 failed (On his own turn, tapped out with a lone Aetherling. Don't ask me why he did it on his own turn).
Just how many scry lands do they have to play to convince themselves that esper-control is never a deck now that Snapcaster Mage is out of the standard? He let me hit him with turn-2 Mutavault in two matches.
I think that Mono Blue deck is:
a) very, very cool. I mean, I would never get the idea that those cards work well (especially since it plays underwhelming 2-CMC drops)
b) could use Red splash. It's light on Instants/Sorceries - Izzet Charm could be a great catch-all play here. Counterflux could win games against UW.
I went to a win a box tournament tonight. I won the event 4-1.
I posted up the full report in the PyroRed thread, but for now, this event felt dirty. 4 people were attempting to split the box and my buddy and I share all of our cards. It felt like I had win my matches and fight an information war to help screw over people throwing to each other in order to have the best possible match ups.
On the bright side, we got some value. We had the most beastly booster pack we've ever seen, Ashiok and foil Purphoros in the same pack. We also pulled Thoughtseize, that devotion land thing, anger of the gods, swan song, that swine blue card, and a few other 3 to 7 dollar rares. All in and all, a good box. Kind of wished we got the green god for my buddy and a dragon though.
Blurgh. I soooo need to find more time for testing before bigger events. 1-2 in states with shame hole bye. Losses come from misplays with PyRos. Deck so punishes you for playing bad. This deck(or PyroRed) will FORCE me to be a better player this season
Some men just want to watch the planes burn. . .and most of them are here. FoS resident designer/codemonkey MTGO:lorddax Cockatrice:lorddax
Welp, I lost to Esper 1-2. Game 1 he wrecked me with Ashiok into Jace into Elspeth. Game 2 went in my favor with a Lightning Strike plus Phoenix to seal the deal. I bled out in game 3 when I didn't draw land past my 2 openers. He killed me with 9 Elspeth soldiers backed by an emblem.
Ain't fazed. I'm going in for more. Record : 2-1

Faced Esper back to back last night and having to deal with back to back to back planeswalkers is a pain in the ass. Do you feel Ashiok is a big enough threat that it needs to be dealt with? I ignore it when it hits the board but unsure if it is the right play. Starting to hate Elspeth though when I see her on the other side of the table.
@Tube That sucks man Hope recovery is as painless as possible
