James, I just sent word out to my nephew to see if he can find out anything from folks he knows...may not get us anywhere but I thought I'd try. What possible reason is there for stopping prize events? Are revenues somehow falling off for them?

I don't know. Apparently Kibler having been inconvenienced once means the rest of us lose our revenue stream.

From the article, I think they're doing this to fix the damn thing. It sucks, but it gives them time to breath and work on fixing all the issues they've been having

Yeah, the fact that grinders are going to take a revenue hit sucks, but ultimately what's going on has to happen. Kibler pitching a bitch isn't the issue...he's simply calling attention to its existence. If MODO is going to continue as a premiere online gaming venue, the powers-that-be absolutely have to have an infrastructure in place that redundantly protects game states system-wide. This has been the central issue for MODO from the start--asking people to invest $$$$$ in cardboard as a physical commodity is one thing, but pixels are another issue altogether. Were the mother ship not to address this obviously glaring issue with their online system, the future of MODO would be in jeopardy as non-techy people would take the simple read on the sitch--my $$$ are not safe in this system. It really sucks that this is how things have to go, but the goal outcome will be better for everyone.

Seems better for them to actually work towards doing something then just putting a band-aid on the situation while promising "free beer tomorrow" so to speak.

In the long run, this makes everyone more money assuming they do it right as you'll get a larger influx of players which means more events, ergo more chances for the players to play, and more money for wizards. Seems like the correct direction to go.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

I like how they consulted with the community...oh, wait.

Guys like xMiMx and sZuLer earn ~$2000 a month. MODO is their primary source of income. Real nice.

Nobody eveer accused WotC of being good at communicating. That's been one of the central complaints of EVERY community outrage over the last year.

Though to be fair, having MODO being your primer source of income doesn't seem like a great way to live. That is not an argument >_>

Depends on which part of world you live in, that said I really dislike multi-queue grinders like xMiMx which turn events that should only last 2 hours into 4 hour+ affairs.

I hear what you're saying, James, and I hate that you and other grinders are getting hosed at the wrong time of year. But that being said, WotC didn't create MODO as an income generator for grinders...their existence in the community is just an accepted side effect of an open system, much like secondary market sellers. Quite honestly, grinders are likely the least desirable clients for them from a business model POV. Their bread and butter are high-turnover players who come in, spend money, leave with cards locked in their profiles and thus generate need for more packs to be opened so new people can access cards.

And again, taking down the DE's gives them a predictable outcome rather than gambling on more stability crashes. They are taking the low-variance path and accepting that it leaves them with certain unhappy sectors of the community population. It's regrettable that they are at this particular crossroads, but
it's the price of the past infrastructure decisions.

Black ice in NC this morning. GG.
My parents live in Kansas and talk about black ice all the time. The family joke is that black ice sounds so much like "black guys", that we try to say subtly racist things and slip it by each other.

"I almost lost my car to the black ice this morning"
"Be careful, there's black ice outside"
"Black ice next door? There goes the neighborhood"

etc.

so my LGS is having a $5 buy-in Modern tourney on Sunday the 24th. I'm wondering what to take. I have a legacy Merfolk deck that I could port over into Modern. And I have all the tools to make it into that U/b Merfolk list that Alex posted a while back.

Quick question on that, though - how good is Cryptic Command? I know in a vacuum how powerful the card is, but is it a bit too slow for a deck that wants to vial in lords and activate manlands? Should it be Mana Leak instead?

EDIT: For reference, this is the list Alex posted:

[deck]
Creature (21)
4x Lord of Atlantis
4x Master of the Pearl Trident
2x Merfolk Sovereign
4x Merrow Reejerey
4x Silvergill Adept
3x Sygg, River Cutthroat

Instant (5)
3x Cryptic Command
2x Go for the Throat

Sorcery (4)
4x Thoughtseize

Land (22)
4x Creeping Tar Pit
4x Darkslick Shores
5x Island
4x Mutavault
1x Urborg,
Tomb of Yawgmoth
4x Watery Grave

Enchantment (4)
4x Spreading Seas

Artifact (4)
4x AEther Vial

Sideboard (15)
1x Cursecatcher
3x Doom Blade
1x Go for the Throat
2x Grimoire Thief
1x Mindbreak Trap
1x Profane Command
3x Tidebinder Mage
3x Turn Aside
[/deck]

Lots of mead. Then, in between rounds, drunkenly piss on an expensive European car. After tournament, proceed directly to nearest strip club. Snort copious amounts of blow off a strippers bare ass.

Once home, light a candle in your shrine that you've made to redthirst's crank. Say the Pyromaster's Prayer. Proceed to fuck the ever loving shit out of the stripper you brought home.

Then, and only then, may you post about it the following day in this thread.
