No doubt...always they come with the directions and the suggestions and the meddling. Oi.

;-)

I guess we all need to get in the habit of operating in the relevant forums...we could I suppose for the time being post over there and throw a directing post up here to get clansmen to look.

It would be helpful if it was done this way because that way the standard section wouldn't look completely barren anymore. There's no reason that it should look that way considering the amount of deckbuilding that goes on here.

Yeah the baron is really bad now when stacked against Thragtusk and Wurms. Tubehunter's list looks great, but I've had too many bad experiences playing decks that fold to supreme verdict -> sphinx's revelation.
I'm not sure I follow here, Sasky; pretty much all the creature decks currently in Standard take a hit from board wipe into Rev with the exception of Reanimator. If you're going to play a creature-based strategy, you have to play around Verdict.

As to both Tusk and Wurm relative to Baron, I think Baron blanks a lot more creatures than he gets blanked by
and he has major upsides. I also think that this list would benefit by playing some number of Selesnya Charm, as it can exile either Tusk or Wurm, or alternately let Baron win against them with added lifegain.
Not true. Mostly just decks that run Gyre Sage. Aggro decks go under, while aristocrats and reanimator smile at board wipes.

Baron is bad, and I say that as someone who bought a playset and thought he was uber. He just played badly against so many things. Selesnya charm is a very good idea to make him playable though. But please don't try to pump your own baron.

we've just been so conditioned that the standard forum is a scary place that should only be visited with wisdom that has been tempered and forged in the fires of the clan first, lest the cesspoll absorb some tidbit of accidental laziness on our part.

Lets see...

I feel I haven't been contributing enough lately, so I'll just say you guys are awesome and these past couple days I've felt that the cumulative effort of the various clan members here developing magic technology has "leveled" me up. I don't know how to describe, though I imagine Khaos knows what I'm talking about as I remember him mentioning being ok, then destroying FNMs regularly. Personally, I consider myself good, but felt I had plateaued for a while. Now though, it just feels like I'm learning...more I guess? Or at a faster pace then I have in a while. Think of school I suppose. From arithmetic to algebra, you have a solid base and you grow incrementally through geometry or whatever. Then
suddenly, you find yourself moving through levels of calculus. Idk, rambling, love you guys.
I really feel that I came into my own as a Magic player when we were all collaborating on Z's primer during the impending rotation. I learned more in the span of 4 or 5 months than I had in the last 4 or 5 years. I never considered myself a slouch in Magic, but I never really considered myself to be any good either. The main driving force in my progression was finally finding some real, like-minded people that understood Magic the way I do. In my area, I was more of a loner; religiously sticking with Red, despite having sub par card selections when compared to the overall meta, and defiantly tapping Mountains in the face of hate cards like Kor Firewalker. When my friends were telling me to start playing Jund, or even Caw-Blade, I truly felt alone as a Magic player.

With States around the corner, I knew that we, as a group, were on to something. We developed Dos Rakis, which would remain off
the radar internationally for a couple of months. We developed the high-end Mono Red and the Sledgehammer. We knew cards like Stonewright, KoI, and Hellion Crucible were amazing before the world did. We were in on transformational sideboards from the very beginning. We analyzed every single possible deck archetype and developed a battle plan for each one before everybody else knew Mono Red even had a fighting chance in the format. We were ahead of the curve and our method of collective deckbuilding on a forum site, something that Craig Wescoe even wrote about months later, had solid results.

Simply put, we were on fire. :flame:

With everybody's help, I was able to find the fundamental flaw in my playstyle - the art of sideboarding. I never could have done that alone. I also had to admit to myself that I knew way less than I thought I did. I even had to learn that my card assessment skills weren't as
strong as I had previously thought. For example, I dismissed Hound of Griselbrand immediately, yet I was happier than Tyrion Lannister in a whorehouse to be proven wrong on that. Sometimes, to quote Master Yoda, "You must unlearn what you have learned."

Being given an outlet to write about Magic helped mold me into a better player too. Sometimes you just don't realize how much you actually know until you're spilling it all out on a blank screen. The feedback I received was a tremendous boost to my confidence, as well as my ego. Not to mention, I was ravenously devouring any little bit of information Z, ham, redthirst, and others put out. Writing helped cement the wealth of knowledge I was absorbing and firmly planted it into a place I could easily access within my mind.

Together we all help each other grow. We are a springboard to bounce ideas back and forth. Sometimes we stagnate, but other times we're still pushing the envelope further. For example, Fate cut Ash Zealot out of his deck,
which 99% of the time would be considered a blasphemous act. However, he made Top 8 at States to back up his ingenuity and crazy deck changes. Who would've thunk it?

However, as the months go by, I feel as if I'm stagnating or at the very least, riding on a plateau. The thing is, my deck hasn't changed at all in the last few months. But at the same time, why fix something that isn't broken? I mean, Black Sabbath perfected a sound in the late sixties and never bothered to change it, so why should I? At times, I feel that I've lost the Eye of the Tiger, but at the same time, we all worked our asses of months ago to afford the luxury of riding out the wave on this gravy train.

There's one thing I do know: whether it's with the release of M14 or with rotation into Theros, we'll be scrambling again to sculpt Fire into a weapon of death. The inevitable shifting of the meta is what's going to light the fire under our asses again and turn us into a well-oiled machine of punishing flame. That day is
coming and when it gets here, nobody will be safe from the Fires of Salvation. We may have grown into some great players in the last 7-8 months, but we'll truly be a force to be reckoned with a year from now.

I'm all fired up now. Excuse me, I need to go punch somebody's grandma in the face with my dick.

That was inspiring to read, Justin. I've felt a bit stagnant lately, too. I think INN block rotating will give me a fresh slate to start brewing again.

I miss the amazing work I was part of during RTR standard. Theros, I predict, will get me moving again.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one feeling that way. I suppose it's bound to happen to everybody at some point : writers get writer's block, musicians stagnate and start binge drinking, college students slip behind and start chronically masturbating, etc.

I guess the important thing is that we recognize when it happens and just keep slogging forward. I'm not gonna lie though, as great as the current Standard is, I'm almost bored with it to a degree. It seems to me that a big
change needs to happen to shake things up.

One thing that I do miss right now - the streaming. You and Z make the most entertaining and informative streams ever. I want them back! :gonk:

Have to say Bruce Lee is my hero though when it comes to Chinese
I'm pretty sure I'm the only person ever who doesn't enjoy most Bruce Lee films. Too over the top. Now Ip Man, that's a martial arts film. My top two are Ip Man and Fearless. Shaolin is also pretty good.

+1 Khaos and ham--well spoken, gentlemen. As is likely obvious, I've been struggling with that feeling of stagnation as well. We were on the bleeding edge of an archetype through the first half of this rotation, and the established dominances in the current meta are tiresome.

However, while the metagame may have stifled creativity for the moment, the personal growth that has occurred for many of us throughout the process continues on. As a clan we build on one another's strengths and accomplishments, and in doing so we each raise ourselves up beyond the standards we establish. Rock on, my friends.
