I think you want 3 hellrider/21 land Khaos. Remember your conversation with the Rainmaker: You died with hellrider in your hand, didn't you.

As for sideboards: The cards you see show up the most are VS, The X-4th pillar(if they aren't all main), some number of mizzium mortars, threatens(traitorous blood, mark, etc.), and a falter affect be it pyreheart wolf or gruul war chant.

Personally, I run 2 skullcracks as the card is powerful, but aside from Sphinx's revelation decks, I don't ever feel you need a million. If they start catching on again though, I'd want at least 3. I may want 3 anyways since it's so applicable vs. Bant Hexproof countering unflinching courage and fog.

Volcanic strength is mandatory as at least a 3-of because it wins the mirror match when played on an x/3 creature.

I've gone back and for on Traitorous blood/mutiny, but I think I like it. Good against fliers, and
against jund, I've started going deep, boarding out all the removal in favor of blood, skullcrack, VS, and RANGERS GUILE.

Pyreheart wolf is adorable and can just win games. I beat triple thragtusk against bant the other day. Not one at a time. 3 Tusks on board. It's possible Gruul war chant is better since the affect is immediate and you get the power boost, but I've never tested it because it's not a threat and it costs four. Still, it is a more powerful card.

Ranger's Guile. The cutest card I've ever had the misfortune of casting. I normally have a rule about not playing bad cards, but I keep imagining all these scenarious where it blows out your opponent, especially if they play blue. Aside from countering azorius charm and dealing a damage. Restoration angel now just dies to flinthoof boar. WHAT? Recommend you test a lot with it, but if there's any Johnny Combo in you, I'd say go for it.

Fog-?????????????????????????????????????? Ask Fate.

Mizzium mortars. I love this card so much,
I play 1 main with the fourth pillar in the board. Sometimes you need to kill a smiter. Every time I draw it game one, it's amazing. I think you want at least 2 in your list, I play 3 fwiw.

Sideboarding is a bitch. There's no real matchup guide as I board differently all the time and recently I've been doing radical things. It usually takes me longer to board then to play my matches. Good luck and may you scorch your enemies to a crisp.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

One thing to mention about the Miami list is that the madcaps seem necessary for him to not just have the worst BTE deck ever. With that many lands, he shows a dedication to hitting his top end, so explosiveness is less relevant, but the madcaps ensure that he steals gets in for damage early without having to worry about blockers which I guess makes sense over mauler. In the lower curve more threat dense lists, Mauler's amazing as you can just throw your hand on the board on win on turn 4. In this deck, he cares more about killing with hellrider and having a powerful sideboard.

I still don't like the look of it, but it makes sense to me and his record speaks for itself.

But I have yet successfully cast a blasphemous act in any gruul deck ever :/

Edit: Apparently a similar list to the Miami one just won last nights MODO PTQ though. http://www.wizards.com/magic/Digital/Ma ... rn/5656721

He beat UWR and Junk Rites twice in top 8. His sideboard had 4 Domri!

LP and Fate, thanks brohirrim.

LP, in regards to my performance with KDW, I died with Hellrider in hand in a 22/24 land deck. At least with Gruul, the deck is made to survive on 2-3 land.

As for Ranger's Guile, I used it back when I played Mono Green Infect during Scars/INN, and tbh, I was never that impressed with it. Once or twice it may have saved me from Dismember. I dunno. With that said, since you guys say it's applicable against a wide variety of decks, don't y'all think it should be in the main?

Anyhoo, here's what I may bring with me:

[deck]Sideboard (15)
4 Skullcrack
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Electrickery
2 Traitorous Blood
3 Volcanic Strength[/deck]

No bullshit, just good, plain answers. Though I may do a 3/1 split on Mortars and....Domri. If he's a trap, then I think I want to fall in. I really just want to use him to
start pit fights with Reckoner.

Guile isn't something you want maindeck, because game one, you want to maximize your turn4-6 wins before people have answers. You just want a streamlined, punishing deck. In boarded games, it's an answer to there answers that pushes through damage. I still haven't played it in tourney and I'm not sure if I plan too but...it could be REALLY sweet.

Domri is a card I like a lot, but I'm not sure if I want FOUR. That's going really deep and I have a fear of drowning :D

K, I came to my senses. I'm going to run with this for tonight and I'll tweak here and there after FNM.

[deck]Sideboard[/deck]

The Wolf is pretty boss against midrange decks, our number one weakness. He goes in until he dies, or I find somebody better.

Board looks good. I kind of wished I fed you a line of bull about how great gruul war chant is, mostly because I want someone other then myself to test the card because I think it's good, but I'm too lazy to test cards myself(I'll do most anything to keep from re-double sleeving cards).

In other news, in addition to the 5k standard I'm playing on Sunday, looks like a buddy is lending me a Legacy deck to play in the 4k on Saturday. I'm gonna be dredging it up. So long as I don't get leyline of the Void'd, I fully expect to be murdering people with Zombie tokens and Flayer of the Hatebound. Had a game where my opponent surgicalled my bridges. Plan b? Beat with narcs and Ichorid. Sac dude for cabal seeing if the coast is clear. Dread guys for flayer, trigger, take 4. Flashback second cabal on flayer, undy, trigger take 5. Exacties son? GG?

GP Kansas City is up and running! My nephew is the night manager for the whole shebang, so we will be heading out there off and on all weekend. I wish we'd gotten out this afternoon to play Mini Masters, but didn't happen...we will have to settle for jumping into some tourneys on Saturday and Sunday. Also, Terese Nielson, Dan Scott and Steve Prescott are here, so we'll be getting our RIP's and such signed (and maybe altered if Nielson is doing some of her fun paint pen alters this go-round). Of course, we will also be looking to fanboy a bit...my nephew knows many of the circuit players, so hopefully we'll get the opportunity to chat.

echoing the 3 hellriders/21 land.

I actually was on the fence as well/ocd

But then

I put in the 21st mountain upside down in the sleeve and took out the 4th hellrider.

Man did I see that mountain off the top a lot, or hell, even as the 2nd land in hands to make it playable (which is where land count REALLY matters IMO)

If you want real numbers and not just story evidence, by Ham's numbers (I think) 21st land gives you an extra 10% or so to curve out onto 4 on time.

mortars or fog, its a playstyle choice. You want more solid? Mortars is probaly yuor bet.

You want to go balls deep and race a motherfuckers Volcanic strength? Gruul Fog son.

also useable against bant hexproof whereas mortars is sometimes dead

So madcap, and quad hellrider on 22 land actually feels a LOT more powerful. Confirmation bias? But four domris....at least they're clean boarding against control.

Lost round 1 to multiple predator oozes and fog in games1 and 2. I can't help but laugh.

But then, the Jack Daniels really makes it possible, lol.

So actually testing for myself has converted me to madcap skills. That is a LOT of power packed into a normally bad type of card. attacking someone for 5 on turn two is big game.

The question is can I justify 4 domri's in the board. It helps that the matches I've played against UWR control have been laughably easy and I even kept in the aura's in boarded games! Domri Makes it not embaressing to slap madcap on a creature and swing into charm/angel mana. If they have the angel, they can't block, if they have the charm, at least I don't lose a draw step.

That was close. Was very close to registering some farseek/huntmaster deck for the weekend.

Welp, got the bye round 2. Lost round 3 because I mulled into oblivion both games and sat on only 2 lands. My opponent was new and playing a very "beginners" Boros deck.

Embarrassing.

Definitely going to the 21/3 split....

I went 3-1 at fnm last night with that MB and a slightly different SB.

Beat Delver, junk rites and UWR then lost to B/G control in the finals. Deck feels solid.

My friend is building BG control and wants me to run it at FNM next week while he runs Bant hexproof because he hasn't been able to run the hexproof deck yet. As much as I love mono red I may push it to the wayside to try this new deck out. It'll be the first time I've cast Thragtusk in 10 months so it will be cool casting overpowered cards again.

Went 2-3 tonight at FNM. My only wins were from byes. Yep, my worst FNM ever.

I think I don't like Gruul. I lost to bad players and bad decks, and even then, the deck just seemed too "hit or miss."

Fortunately, I'm going to a different Mono Red build that is very similar to a design made by one of our very own FoS members. Astute reader will recognize this.

[deck]
Creatures (29)
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Rakdos Cackler
2 Stonewright
4 Ash Zealot
3 Gore-House Chainwalker
1 Lightning Mauler
4 Pyreheart Wolf
4 Hellrider
3 Hound of Griselbrand

Burn (8)
4 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear

Land (23)
3 Hellion Crucible
20 Mountain

Sideboard
3 Mizzium Mortars
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
1 Hellion Crucible
1 Stonewright
1 Hound of Griselbrand
2 Traitorous Blood
2 Electrickery
3 Skullcrack
[/deck]

Man, I'm so excited to unleash this onto my local area. I'm actually really excited about this.
Plus, the deck is already foiled out, minus the Hellkites and 2 Cacklers! Long haul, here I come!

Modern FNM: played goblin, won against burn, lost against burn, lost against burn, won agains martyr -> 2-2
DGM draft FNM: played BUG control with a lot of gatekeepers, counters/removal, 2 Gorgons of Xathrid, and 2 Hired Torturers as the only means to victory -> grinded out a 3-1 and won the first Cackler.

FUCK YEAH.

Also, going to a tournament in ~6 hours, I'm brainstorming about a Gruul deck to bring there.
[deck]
Creatures
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Hellrider
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager

Spells
4 Searing Spear
2 Pillar of flame

Lands
12 Mountain
4 Stomping Ground
4 Rootbound Crag
2 Temple Garden
[/deck]

Now, I feel like I really need to learn how I should REALLY think when preparing for an event, so I'm just going to publish here my train of thought in order to let you all have fun of me

I won't bring out the Ash Zealot (love her way too much), won't play 2/1s.

I expect lots of aggro (Gruul, Naya, Boros, RDW), a couple of control (Esper, UWR), 4-color reanimator, Sire Jund and Naya midrange.
Also, I feel in the force that there'll be an Aristocrats Act 2.
I also seriously doubt I'll see Bant Enchantments.

I feel like the sideboard MUST feature 3x VS, 3x Pyreheart Wolf, 3x Mizzium Mortars and 6 I-DON-T-FUCKIN-KNOW spots that could feature Ranger's Guile, Skullcrack, Electrickery, Traitorious Blood and/or the last 2 Pillars.
I feel that Skullcrack is pretty much a must have as Crypt Incursion is quite relevant over here (even though, let's face it, I don't like it too much), Electrickery might be a bad choice but could also save the day against Aristocrats, TBlood is always an effect I'd like to appeal to but I don't know if I really NEED it, and I'd prefer Zealous Conscripts over this but I don't feel
confident on playing 5-drops on a 22 land decks.

Ok, maybe I'm just thinkin' the wrong way around, let's say I can add in 2 ZC and forget TBlood - I just feel like I'll need the stealing against midrange decks where I'm going to add a lot of sideboard cards already - namely wolves, mortars, pillars.

That brings me to:
3 Volcanic Strength
3 Pyreheart Wolf
3 Mizzium Mortars
2 Zealous Conscripts
2 Pillar of Flames
5 extra spots

I feel like I can reserve those spots to control hate.
As said earlier, I feel like that Skullcrack is mandatory - don't know if as a 2-of or a 3-of, the rest could be reserved to Ranger's Guile or Hound of Griselbrand.

Let's say, 2x Skullcrack + 3x Ranger's Guile or 3x Skullcrack + 2x Hounds.

Need more thinking.

I *do* need to switch LM in for Zealots.
Being able to chain BTE only in 1 drops, other BTEs or Boar on game 1 is not letting her do her work, and playing a BTE-based deck cutting the chance of nut draws is plainly stupid.

Also, I'll probably end up ignoring Ranger's Guile, as I don't like the fact that it requires green mana - Hounds love LM, btw.

[deck]
Creatures
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Hellrider
4 Ghor-Clan Rampager

Spells
4 Searing Spear
2 Pillar of flame

Lands
12 Mountain
4 Stomping Ground
4 Rootbound Crag
2 Temple Garden

Sideboard
3 Volcanic Strength
3 Pyreheart Wolf
3 Mizzium Mortars
2 Zealous Conscripts
2 Pillar of Flames
3 Skullcrack
2 Hound of Griselbrand
[/deck]

Now moving to the proper thread.

2-0 so far at my GPT. 3x BTE + Lightning Mauler on second turn, followed by Flinthoof Boar on third is quite sweet...

On tilt. Arrived to FNM late and didn't really mind as I was there just to hang out and I don't like playing tourneys before semi-large events. Then at the end of the night they gave out the Rakdos Cackler promos...FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

I also scored a Cackler promo last night. Happy Birthday to me! People were trading high for them and silly me forgot my trade binder. Oh well, there's still another chance for 'em and I think I'll be able to score at least 1 more before going online to get the other 2 I'll need.

You's a day early, but thank you! I think that's why I got the Cackler at FNM, they know I only play R/x and it's my b-day weekend. It's nice having a shop where pretty much everyone is friends.

Modern FNM: played goblin, won against burn, lost against burn, lost against burn, won agains martyr -> 2-2
How did you like the Goblin deck in general? I'm thinking of trying a similar one myself at some point, since got my fourth Legion Loyalist in a trade today.

I want to play it again before saying anything definitive, yet some hands feel REALLY explosive and I grant you that Loyalist + Shared Animosity makes you feel quite omnipotent. :toot:

I played against a Goblin deck last week at Modern FNM. Like you said, certain times it felt like the deck was unstoppable. I was playing RDW and he beat me pretty handily one game when he had the nut draw. The other games I outraced him and was able to pillar/bolt his major threat cards. I'd be interested in seeing your list to see if it was the same list this guy was playing. It's the Modern deck that I plan on building just because it's so much damn fun when it works.

I, too, scored a promo cackler. It's now sitting proudly in my cube.

And happy birthday Suga! Be sure to celebrate like YOLO. Hookers are your safest bet.
