Ok, serious question. How much does scavenging ooze screw with us? I imagine it sees a lot of play with green being the best color in the format and it being solid vs. reanimator and aggro. I'm thinking I may hold off on the chandra's phoenix brews...

In other news I was reminded of why i love GerryT. In his article, he wrote about how he feels like Goblin guide and chandra's phoenix should be legal in standard for ever because that's how red should operate which is basically my dream world.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Scavenging ooze screwing red?

The life gain? The body? Iunno. Pillar shock spear that fuck the second it lands I guess? Between that and Voice, Naya's road blocks just keep getting lower and lower curve. Sounds like the perfect time to go to the air with phoenix.

Ooze can exile the Phoenix from the graveyard, potentially before we can "resurrect" it. That is going to be a very annoying card to fight. I know mono-red is more consistent, but I'm thinking about keeping a BR shell going for Dreadbore, Doom Blade, and Ultimate Price.

I could be wrong, but I don't see Scavenging Ooze hurting us much. Hit them hard and fast and play through it. It's only a grizzly bear. We typically don't gave much in our graveyards it can use to grow anyway.

I agree. I don't think it will see THAT much maindeck play once Reanimator is out if the format either.

I disagree. I think it will see considerable play. Sure, it's a bear, but it's a bear that grows, and it gains life as it grows. Mid to late game it's a mana sink for green since it can feed on anyone's graveyard. It's a good counter to recurring creatures like the Phoenix, and it's an excellent target for Unflinching Courage. Hell, it even works with the Archangel of Thune.

Thankfully, the damned thing doesn't have hexproof.

It only grows off creature cards. Against green midrange decks, goreclan rampager is usually the only creature in my yard.

Did anyone else see Flores' barely boros burn list? If not, use your imagination (reckoner, young pyromancer and all the burn). Think something like that could be viable?

Basically, my thoughts on ooze is that it locks us out of winning the mid late game with it's abilities. Before, I was OK going turns 7/8 against the non reanimator midrange decks as you could reasonably beat a thragtusk plus something. Now, I think there's too much good removal and lifegain for us to reasonably grind those midgame wins which is where phoenix excels. On the other hand, phoenix has haste which makes it possibly better then reckoner in mono red.

In other news, I didn't know gladcover scout got reprinted. I'm more or less on WotCs side with there card/set design, but giving bant hexproof 2 great creatures has me kind of on tilt. On the plus side, Hexproof being a deck oddly makes more room for control in the format since edicts and wraths are great against that deck which spices up the metagame somewhat so hopefully that's a net plus for magic. I love diverse fields, even if I hate 1 or 2 decks.

For
something completely different, while I'm not a fan of Brad Nelson's articles, this was kind of touching and mirrors my experience with the game somewhat:

For me, Magic is everything. It got me out of my shell when I was a shy teenager. It challenged me when I was just skating through life. It taught me how to lose before it showed me what it truly felt like to be a champion. When I was on top, it forced my hand in learning how to be humble. When I was on the bottom, it revealed silver linings. It gave me passion.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

How much life is an Ooze going to gain though? 5? It isn't like they're good in multiples like Thragtusk (in fact, they're actively bad in multiples). Other than that it's just a big body which we're well positioned to deal with via pump, falter, threatens, evasion or terrors (same reason Loxodon Smiter was never an issue). Obviously it's a good card, but less oppressive against Rx than Hubtmaster or Thragtusk, which is what needs to be kept in mind. The real value if the card is in removing high value reanimator targets, which doesn't impact out strategy at all.

Thought ooze gained 2 life instead of 1. DISREGARD EVERYTHING I SAID, I'M A FUCKIN NOOB.

Did same thing earlier today. I keep insisting that my talrand has flying and suicide him in a commander game today. Still won because time ebb+call to mind is plenty turns, especially when your playing with planechase and selesnya plane is doubling season. Yeah, I'll turn ponder into a card plus 2 drakes, thank you.

While, I'm in story mode, combo killed my friend in cube draft today with my jund deck. His turn 5, he plays tamiyo, I have conscripts in hand. Internal grin. Long story short, I steal his tamiyo turn 9ish, pop it for ultimate. Turn 10 or 11, I act of treason his loltleth troll, discard thrun 18 million times and swing hyper hyper lethal.

Trolling Modern FNM with this pile:

[deck]
4 Tarmogoyf
4 Oxidda Scrapmelter

4 Ancient Grudge
4 Ancient Stirrings
4 Harmonize
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Molten Rain
4 Pyroclasm

4 Liquimetal Coating

4 Copperline Gorge
4 Fire-lit Thicket
4 Raging Ravine
4 Tectonic Edge

4 Forest
4 Mountain
[/deck]

Yes, that's up to 20 LD effects in a very compact shell.

Will figure out the sideboard at the venue I suppose, but will probably just include 5 cards for aggro, 5 cards for combo and 5 cards for control. You know, more LD, more sweepers etc.

Fingers crossed for Affinity, Tron and Scaleshift every round!

Something I learned the week of AVR release; Tamiyo emblem returns cards sent to graveyard from anywhere. In esper, drownyard can drownyard yourself to draw three a turn. In this case, after stealing his troll, I discard creatures from my hand, emblem returns them from the gy back to my hand, then I go infinite. I was feeling really smart.

[deck]
4 ash zealot
4 boros reckoner
4 young pyromancer

4 boros charm
4 searing spear
4 skull crack
4 thunderbolt
4 warleader's helix

2 flames of the firebrand
4 pillar of flame

4 clifftop retreat
4 sacred foundry
11 mountain
3 plains[/deck]

Not sure if I'm missing something sneaky good; but Chandra's Phoenix might just be better than Boros Reckoner here, while Chandra herself should maybe make an appearance at the top of the curve. Unsure, but looks fun.

I think the flores list had the reckoner act combo which makes some sense with YP in the mix as it gives you a reasonable ability to reset the board in lots of relevant matchups since we run so few creatures(blockers) and our burn needs to go the face what with it being our primary win con and all.

There was also a Z deck that he posted(aka, token rally the peasants).

It's missing the Blasphemous Act piece that LP mentioned earlier from the Flores list. Use Pyromancer to generate tokens to lower the cost of Act to where you can cast Act and Boros Charm on the same turn. If you don't kill them with the Act + Reckoner, you'll be able to swarm them with indestructible tokens afterwards. Plus, and I
think this is what LP focused on, Pyromancer triggers off the Act and Charm, allowing us to build board presence back more quickly than the opponent.

I don't know shit about cars and I really wish I had a father growing up now

just got run the fuck around by these jiffy lube clowns.

Hoping someone in the clan has cars as a part time hobby:

1. I come in for a standard oil change, they do it all w/e and good and during checkout they ran down their list of shit they filled up. I was charged for two quarts of antifreeze because that was empty. They said they filled my windshield wiper fluid
Me: "How? The reservoir is under the subwoofer in my trunk, how'd you fill it up?"
Them: "Hold I'll go ask. [Comes back] they fuond another place to put it."
Me: "ok..."

I go out to drive away, there's no wiper fluid. Whatever, fuckin liars.
On the way home I notice the car's running differently. The engine is just chugging and its very noticeable. I figure they gave me bad oil or something, and keep going.

Thursday:
The chugging is worse,
and a cylinder misfires and the check engine light comes on. What the fuck. I go back because of their warranty guarantee bullshit, and ask it to be checked out. They say its the O2 cylincders misfiring, and they don't go anywhere naer that. They also say "the check engine light was on when you came in for service, so..."
Me: "What?? No it DEFINITELY came on yesterday thats why I"M HERE."
Them: "Oh thats what I was told."
Me: "This is shadier by the second."
Them: *goes to get manager. I hear him in the back "go talk to the kid"

Disrespectful fucks.

Manager tries to run me around, gose "well if they did put windshield wiper in the wrong place its just water in the summer mix. The winter mix has alchohol n shit and you dont have to worry about that."

I go: "I WAS charged for antifreeze, it says it right here on the billl! And why is that reservoir empty? Did you charge me and not fill it up? Did it get sucked into the engine
and cause this problem?"

He just makes more excuses, takes me underneath to show me where the O2 cylinders are. I don't care if they aren't near the oil, they definitely caused the issue.

Fate doesn't believe in coincidences.

So he starts offering me a refund n shit, but I don't care about the refund, I care about fixing my car to the way it was before I took it to this place. I gotta fill out a report and wait for some customer service bullshit, which will take who knows how long and if they'll even give me what I want.

Fuckfuckfuckfuck. Accidents are one things, but I can't stand people who can't man up and own them and want to cover their own ass.

That's why you NEVER get work done on your car at a chain place. I always use small local mechanics because they tend to be the most reliable. Those guys rely on word of mouth so they tend to be more honest and do better work.

I go: "I
WAS charged for antifreeze, it says it right here on the billl! And why is that reservoir empty? Did you charge me and not fill it up? Did it get sucked into the engine and cause this problem?"

Brocephus, that fucking sucks balls. I fell for the ole Jiffy Lube act when I was about 16 and I was also bamboozled by Just Brakes. Never again will I
ever go there in my life and I will always tell people the same thing:

(1)Never go to Jiffy Lube or Just Brakes (or any other place like that) for any reason whatsoever.

(2)Learn how to change a tire, your sparkplugs, your brake pads, air filter, and your oil and other essential fluids. None of these tasks take more than 15-20 minutes, require minimal investment and will save you a fortune in the long run. Plus, these will be your tools to rescue any damsel in distress and get your foot in the door for a quickie or a blowjob. Also, make sure you have the right tools to do these: ratchet set, a jack, tire iron, funnel, oil wrench, and oil pan. The rest of your life will be so much better.

As for what you can do now? I'd say the damage is done. Sorry, but that's just the way it goes. These fuckers are the masters of shirking responsibility and the blame. You can't fight them; just take your "refund" and never come back. Sad, but true.

Anyways, this is my list
for tonight's FNM:

[deck]
Creatures (29)
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Rakdos Cackler
2 Stonewright
4 Ash Zealot
3 Gore-House Chainwalker
1 Lightning Mauler
4 Pyreheart Wolf
4 Hellrider
3 Hound of Griselbrand

Burn (8)
2 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear
2 Flames of the Firebrand

Land (23)
3 Hellion Crucible
20 Mountain

Sideboard
2 Pillar of Flame
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
2 Stonewright
2 Traitorous Blood
4 Mizzium Mortars
3 Volcaninc Strength
[/deck]

Board plan as folows:

R/x Aggro (Gruul, Naya, etc) and Naya Midrange:
On the play: -3 Gore-House Chainwalker, -1 Cackler, +3 Volcanic Strength, +1 Stonewright
On the Draw: -4 Cackler, -3 Chainwalker, -1 Lightning Mauler, +2 Stonewright, +2 Pillar of Flame, +4 Mizzium Mortars

Generic Control MU:
Play or draw: -2 Pillar, -2 Flames of the Firebrand, +2 Stonewright, +2 Thundermaw Hellkite

Note: against those lame "Consuming Aberration Esper" decks that sometimes rear
their ugly heads at FNM, I'll remove 2 Spears for the Traitorous Blood.

G/W Midrange:
Play or Draw: -4 Cackler, -4 Noble, +2 Stonewright, -3 Chainwalker, -1 Mauler, +2 Thundermaw Hellkite, +2 Pillar, +2 Traitorous Blood, +4 Mortars

Jund:
Play or Draw: -2 Pillar, -2 Flames of the Firebrand, -4 Spear, +3 Volcanic Strength, +2 Traitorous Blood, +2 Thundermaw Hellkite, +1 Stonewright

'Muric Control/Midrange:

Play or Draw: -2 Pillar, -2 Flames, +2 Stonewright, +2 Thundermaw

*Note: I'd actually like Skullcrack here to replace my Spears... :/

Reanimator:

Draw: -4 Cackler, -2 Flames, +2 Stonewright, +2 Thundermaw Hellkite, +2 Traitorous Blood

Note: I'd actually like to keep in a couple of Pillars to potentially kill a crucial mana dork or deliver the icing on the cake and exile a Thrag to prevent
reanimation.

Play: -2 Pillar, -2 Flames, +2 Stonewright, +2 Traitorous Blood

Note: I really just want to be really fast and get there with aggression. I'm really banking on Pyreheart, Hound, and Stonewright here, with the Threaten as the icing.

Bant Hexproof:

Play or Draw: -4 Cackler, +2 Pillar, +2 Traitorous Blood

Note: My God, I don't really think I have a plan here. The second time I wish I had Skullcrack in the 75. I guess I'll just try to be really fast here? Steal their non-hexproof guy that they may suit up with T.Blood?

Welp, that's really all I've thought about here. This is just a weird mish-mash of my old deck and Z's old Goodstuff.dec that he played pre-Gatecrash.

Really, I just want to make sure I take down the FNM to secure another Cackler. I have 1 already. 3 more to go...

Thoughts are welcome, guys. Should I use the Volcanic Strength, or go
with the ole Skullcrack?

In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.

Between hellion crucible and 4 mortars I think you're just fine against everything but maybe naya without the VS to be honest (and even they play o-ringa and selesnya charms and mortars to 2-1 you)

My votes for skullcrack surprsingly enough

Just got back from MTG night. Disappointing 2-2 on standard but got 3-1 on the PR. My sealed pool was whack.

[deck=Fliers Everywhere!]
Creatures
1 Galerider Sliver
1 Capashen Knight
1 Seacoast Drake
1 Master of Diversion
1 Trained Condor
1 Warden of Evos Isle
1 Sliver Construct
1 Bonescythe Sliver
1 Charging Griffin
1 Archangel of Thune
1 Dawnstrike Paladin
1 Serra Angel
1 Air Servant

Spells
1 Disperse
1 Blessing
1 Celestial Flare
1 Hive Stirrings
1 Claustrophobia
1 Frost Breath
1 Time Ebb
1 Haunted Plate Mail
1 Spell Blast

Lands
10 Plains
8 Island
[/deck]

The Archangel was a shiny foil, and my MVP for the night. My only loss was incidently her being answered rather luckily. Also pulled a few good cards like Young Pyromancer, and Mindsparker.

Sorry to hear about the car troubles, Fate. Stuff like that is why I go to an official service place for my car brand (Volkswagen). They might be a bit more expensive, but I know they do a good job and I know up front what they'll do to the car. None of those "Oh, and we changed this and that and charged for checking and filling tires as well" surprises.

Learning to do some service yourself is good advise. I'd probably do more stuff myself if I had the place to do it. Now I don't even change my summer/winter tires, because we don't have the space for the spare set so we just have them store them at their warehouse.

Fate – That sucks. Get your refund. Get everything you can in writing, including names of the people you talked with. Make copies. Report them to the local Better Business Bureau. Ask around for a reliable mechanic or shop. Get to know them. If you become a regular, they'll treat you nicely. Here's the contact info for Jiffy Lube corporate http://www.jiffylube.com/about/contact.aspx.

I had my own excitement this afternoon. A driver not paying attention turned right in front of me while my son was in the car with me. I hit the brakes, swerved off the road to avoid plowing through her minivan, went down the embankment, took out a road sign, and narrowly avoided colliding with a light pole. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the car looks to have sustained only minor damage. A bystander saw the whole thing and called the cops. The
other driver had her own kids in the car with her.
