I wonder if this cycle of commanders will all be the Alara shard combinations - Grixis, Bant, Jund, etc.

I look forward to some cool new cards and reprints. It's be awesome if each one came with a Solemn AND a Sol Ring.

One thing, though - after fully optimizing my Kaalia deck and manabase, I never want to tackle a three color deck again.

There's a reason I play mono colored commander decks. The only deck I've ever had that wasn't mono colored was Sygg, River Guide, and that deck might as well have just been an artifact deck. I dismantled it when I made my Drana deck because having two Tron decks seemed pointless.

As it stands, my commanders are,
Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief.
[
card]Molimo, Maro-Sorcerer[/card].
Karn, Silver Golem.

The hardest part about building a mana base for Karn was finding lands that didn't produce colored mana. But that's the only hard part.

I play Jaya in a big Red / big mana deck. Man, I love it.

He's my main, but I still run a mostly basic manabase with him, skewed a bit towards green (over 50%), and with a ton of green ramp.

Might be time to revisit Boros Aggro; seems well positioned right now, although thoroughly unexplored.

4 Boros Elite
4 Champion of the Parish
4 Firefist Striker
4 Frontline Medic
4 Imposing Soverign
1 Kessig Malcontents
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Wojek Halberdiers

1 Mikaeus, the Lunarch

4 Boros Charm
4 Gather the Townsfolk
2 Rally the Peasants

2 Mountain
6 Plains
4 Cavern of Souls
4 Clifftop Retreat
4 Sacred Foundry
[/deck]

Lots of exciting sideboard options of course, Boros is very spoiled in that regard. The exact creature composition could use some work, as could the spells, but it is pretty illustrative of the concept.

Maindeck cards to consider:
- Nearheath Pilgrim
- Doomed Traveler
- Cloistered Youth
- Loyal Cathar
- Silverblade Paladin
- War Falcon

You could board:
- Neartheath Pilgrim
- Fiend Hunter
- Rest in Peace
- Brave the Elements
- Pacifism
- Pillar of Flame

It seems
pretty robust, but arriving at the best 75 would take a lot of work.

It isn't terrible, it just lacks the ability to do many of the things that other colors can do. Mono red decks can still be very powerful (ask Khaos), but you definitely feel the limitations of the color (I really, really wish my Krenko deck could have a better non-creature tutor than Gamble).

if you're worried about facing elecktrickeries and shit with Z's new list, Redthirst's is doing fuckin awesome vs. Jund.

It shores up weakness to board wipes by having mutavault as well, but by playing falkenrath aristocrat and brimstone volley it punishes board wipes instead of folding to them....

real sexy

Mono red? Yeah, mono red can be pretty bad. But red as a color isn't unplayable in EDH. There's some good generals, too, but they're mostly tron. (Godo, Bandit Warlord and Akroma, Angel of Fury being my favorites.)

Tron is really just viable in any color though so I guess even mentioning it is a waste of time.

And another one gets spoiled. I like this one too, because jund generals are all pretty terrible and this guy is like a strict upgrade to Karrthus.

The pattern thusfar certainly does point to Alara shards getting some love, though.

Also I don't know if you guys saw this, but suh-weet. My EDH boner is highly erect.

Kind of want to brew MonoWhiteBraveTheElements.dek

Any reasonable CA engines? I guess that's the big problem honestly; I don't really want to play Mentor; not when the three slot is already glutted with more impactful cards (Reckoner, Silverblade, Fiend Hunter, etc). Maybe splash blue only for Moorland Haunt I guess.

The deck running okay, Fate? I haven't had a chance to really play it much, but after seeing Young Pyromancer in action a little this weekend, I'd love to make a version of RDW that incorporates that. Something like 22 creatures, 16 spells, 22 land - the high spell count should allow the deck to get a lot of mileage out of a pyromancer and I think 22 creatures could be enough with 4 Mutavaults in the mana base.

If you play krenko's command, you can still play hellrider I think.

Also, Mono-White is very good. We've been jamming games all day and the deck is solid. Then there's also something my buddy brewed. Mono-white bant. All the creatures are white except avacyn's pilgrim and it plays rancors and Spectral flight to give it bant hexproof esque draws. The mana is mediocre, but the powerlevel is very high, similar to bant hexproof and naya blitz.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

I think this archetype will be something to look at when Theros hits. Right now we don't quite have the spell quality, but it could happen.

4 x 1 drop
4 x 1 drop
4 Ash Zealot
4 Young Pyromancer

4 Chandra, Pyromaster

4 x burn spell
4 x burn spell
4 x burn spell
4 x burn spell

20 mountain
4 Mutavault

Something
like that will maximise Chandra (easy to cast two spells a turn sooner) and Young Pyromancer (who can protect Chandra). Obviously super card dependant.

People who don't think Chandra is good in standard are delusional IMO. Just needs considered deck building. Chandra is better if you're behind; better in some board stalls as well. There are HEAPS if relevant x/1s and she makes all of your burn much better.

Whether that sort of deck depends on the available burn package; it's bad now, but if we got something like:

4 Arc Trail
4 Burst Lightning
4 Flame Javelin
4 Lightning Bolt

Then we're talking a big game.

Battledriver and Pyromancer are BFFs, though.

I like Krenko's Command, it works with the pyromancer but doesn't take away from your creature slots... I really wish I knew what Theros was going to bring to the table.

Depends on too much for me to say; I really liked the Koth decks in Zen-SOM, so if something like that is viable I would lean towards Chandra. The complexity of the board states and sub-games are very appealing to me.

I've played against Chandra twice now. Both times I ignored her and beat face and won.

Report on RDW at the Magic Market Open (Japan's new WPN Series. They're trying to make it like Japan's SCGO, but it is just getting started) in the RDW thread if interested. Was 3-2.

You said it helps when you're behind :P.

I don't know. It hasn't done anything worth talking about that I've witnessed. I'll stick with Hellrider. Or maybe even MD Burning Earth.
