Sometime in late 2012 (I think it was November but would need to check) Travis posted a series of Red Deck Wins articles aimed at helping players build red decks. A substantial amount of content fromWoo, but if you want to throw in your weekend, i would not complain. The Travis Woo story or the story of my weekend? Both are pretty entertaining.i do not know this story, how does it go?
that article series (three articles) was lifted from my red deck wins primer and discussion generated by community (this is before there was an FOS) at MTGS. None of this work was credited.
Then in the middle of 2013, Travis Woo took creative credit for 'Sledghammer Red', a deck concept written about and popularized by yours truly. What was particularly crappy about this was that:
1. Travis became aware of the concept after a former clan member messaged him the link (Travis was looking for a deck to play in standard)
2. Travis looked at the articles I had written LIVE ON HIS STREAM
Then claimed credit for the deck anyway. I don't really care about not being credited as the deck designer, I care that he published a video and an article about the deck.
The totality of the work plagiarised is worth approximately $400. That's kind of infuriating. Basically, when presented with work that he obviously liked, Travis decided to steal. Contrast this to Josh Silvestri, who when he came across my
writings on PyroRed, made contact with me directly, asking if I would contribute some material to his next article on gatheringmagic.com. When I asked about perhaps writing a guest piece, Josh not only went out of his way to help, but he put me in contact with Channel Fireball.
Now, I don't expect everyone to be as thoughtful and kind as Josh, but there exists a point between the conduct of these two people which is acceptable. Josh went very far beyond what is expected, Travis fell well short.
RE: my weekend.
Valentine's day / night went really well. Pip liked the food I made and the necklace I got her. We ended up sleeping away most of Saturday then watching Adventure Time. We went out Saturday night to celebrate a friend returning from his Officer Training course with the Australian Army (he has just being commissioned as a Lieutenant) and ended up drunkenly dancing on the stage of a live performance until the early hours of the morning. I spend yesterday in bed sick being cared for and
writing my next article.
I am currently sitting at my desk grinning like a dickhead, but true to karma, I do have a very sore throat and a headache.
Overall, I would say that I came out ahead.

There were a great many complaints submitted to CFB through different methods to the point that Travis had to comment directly on the issue after the fact. From memory it was something to the effect of "all the ideas are in the public space and he just took them and refined them. In that way they're his".
As someone who works in Copyright, that's actually fairly true, so there is no point in me going beyond that. Whatever work he has done in editing, compiling, adding personal anecdotes or flair is uniquely his and he owns it. There's no copyright in decklists or in the idea of a midrange red deck; only in my particular (written) way of expressing the ideas. This area of law gets extremely complicated extremely quickly (please see Donoghue v Allied Newspapers from 1937 for the leading case in this area). Beyond that, what damages am I really going to be awarded? I cannot even prove that I would have been given
the opportunity to write the articles at the time or that they would have been popular enough for me to write a series. Am I really going to create a huge issue over a couple of hundred dollars? At best I have a weak claim for a breach of moral rights, something that isn't worth much.
If you're really wanting it, if you can remind me I can dig up all of the material and submit a case to you. You might find it interesting?
As for my continual public venting; I would agree that my conduct has been unprofessional to the extent that I publicly voice it here. I get that. But CFB knows that I do (some members of the team do read here) and no one has raised a concern about it. I was extremely annoyed at the time but it has largely worked out fine.

It often feels like Maverick and Kait, in their own way, are trying their hardest to help me grow as a person. I do very much appreciate the honesty of their assessments.

Travis' brews drastically and habitually warp the price of obscure Modern cards over night. Very few people can accomplish that in this game. So when Zem says, "Travis plays for CFB, how bad can I look?" The answer is very, because nobody cares about anything anyone says on MTGSalvation except the people saying it. The only crime committed is such a stupid name as Sledgehammer Red. I hope Travis had the intelligence to change it.

Not that I'm entirely siding any which way here, but roll-fucking-eyes.jpg. Well, from a purely Copyright perspective, Kait is totally fucking wrong, but taken as the intended comment on reality, I think he is right.

well when zem turns a 20 cent card into a 10 dollar card and lsv does video content of it then I will consider him more than a moral victor in the mtgsalvation okay corralNot that I'm entirely siding any which way here, but roll-fucking-eyes.jpg.
