On a related (or totally unrelated) note: this one time me and my family were at this fast food restaurant in Florida, and my mom, who speaks little-to-no English, tried ordering some fries. Since we call them "papas fritas" (lit. fried potatoes) and just "papas" for short, she just said "potato" to the cashier, and she got a baked potato instead. She started saying that that's not what she wanted (mostly in Spanish), until I arrived and told the guy "she wants french fries". The guy was annoyed but he gave her the fries anyway.
